General FAQ

What age are Jess Cooks meals suitable for?

The original idea for Jess Cooks came from my frustration at the lack of premium quality, pre-made food available for children over the age of 3. So generally we’d say that Jess Cooks products are ideally suited to children aged 2+, but since they are all low in salt and contain no added sugar, they can really be enjoyed by kids (and adults!) of any age!

Why isn’t the rice or pasta included?

Put simply, why would you want to pay over the odds for something that costs very little and tastes so much better cooked fresh? With our protein-packed meals, you get better value for money and the flexibility to add whichever freshly prepared sides you and your kids prefer.

Can I recycle the packaging?

Yes! Both our sleeves and trays are fully recyclable (just remember to rinse the trays  first). Unfortunately, the film isn’t yet recyclable, but we’re doing our best to change that. And when you purchase online, your order will arrive wrapped in an insulated liner made from biodegradable sheep’s wool! For more information on our Sustainability Ethos, visit: about us.

Why are Jess Cooks meals frozen not fresh?

Frozen food has had a bad rap in the past, but people are really starting to come around to the benefits. Jess Cooks meals for kids are chilled and frozen immediately after cooking to preserve their nutritional content and quality without the use of artificial preservatives, chemical gasses or heat treatments. It also allows you to stock up your freezer and use them when needed without worrying about a short use-by date.

Kids don’t like curry do they?

Some kids don’t; that’s true. But I learnt from many years working around children and food that they are much more adventurous than we give them credit for. It’s true that most children don’t like chilli, but that doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy a curry’s delicious, rich flavours. None of the Jess Cooks curries contains any hot spices, so they are all super mild and still packed with flavour.

How many portions are in each pack?

We recommend that one of our children’s meals will easily serve two small appetites (under 5s) or one (very hungry!) older child.  Depending on your children’s age, our family packs are designed to feed 2-3 kids and two adults.

I only have one child, what if they can't eat a whole pack?

No worries! Just allow a pack to defrost in the fridge, then heat up half and save the other half for the following evening. Please bear in mind it’s never a good idea to reheat food more than once.

Delivery FAQ

We want to be as upfront as possible about our delivery costs. There’s nothing worse than spending time ordering something online, only to get a nasty surprise at the checkout when you find out the shipping cost.

There are fantastic advantages to frozen products (less waste, no need for nasty preservatives, better retention of flavour and texture). Still, it does mean that if your order is to reach you in tip-top condition, our products must be transported in fully insulated packaging and delivered to you within 24 hours. Unfortunately none of this comes cheap, but we promise that we don’t charge a penny more for delivery than we have to.

How much does delivery cost?
  • Spend under £50: £3.99
  • Spend over £50: FREE
  • Local delivery (min 6 products): £2.99

(Local delivery is defined as most of the IP14, IP23 and IP6 postcodes, and some of IP1, IP8, IP21, IP22, IP30 and IP31. To check whether you qualify for local delivery please do get in touch via the Contact page.)

Where do you deliver to?

We can deliver to anywhere in mainland UK (excluding more remote areas of the Scottish Highlands).

Will I get a time slot for delivery?

Yes – as long as you provide a mobile number when you place your order, the delivery company will give you a time slot for delivery.

If you have any further questions about delivery please don’t hesitate to get in touch via the Contact page.

How often are orders sent out?

Orders are dispatched by overnight courier every Monday and Wednesday, so your order must be received by 5pm the day before, otherwise it will be sent out on the next delivery day.

Do I need to be at home to receive the delivery?

No, the courier should send you a message to let you know a delivery window. But if you’re not going to be at home you can instruct them to leave it in a safe place. Your order will be happy in its insulated packaging until about 6pm on the day of delivery.

How is my order kept frozen in transit?

Your order will be sent out in a cardboard box with a thick wool liner, and kept cold with plenty of ice packs. Please note that delivery may be delayed in extreme hot weather, but we will contact you and let you know if this is going to be a problem and you will be given the opportunity to cancel your order if you wish to.
